How to Overcome Dental Anxiety or Fear

Whether you have severe fright when it comes to dental visits or you’re mainly just anxious, we’ve put together some tips to help you feel more calm so you don’t have to let your oral health fall by the wayside.

Be Open with Your Dentist

You don’t have to deal with your dental fear or anxiety alone! Your dentist is there to make sure you feel comfortable and safe, and they can better serve you if they are aware of your feelings and concerns. They can more thoroughly explain procedures and what to expect, and they can take breaks when you need them.

Bring Someone You Trust

There’s no shame in bringing a friend or family member with you to your dental appointment. What’s important is that your taking steps to control you anxiety or fear and not letting it prevent you from having a healthy smile. Knowing that a comforting presence is nearby could give help you get through the visit more easily.

Take Advantage of Amenities

It’s becoming common practice for dentists to offer a number of relaxing amenities at their office from pillows and blankets to music headphones to TVs. Ask your dental office what they have available to help you feel more at home. That extra bit of comfort while sitting in the dental chair could help change your perspective about the dentist.

Practice Breathing Techniques

Controlled breathing is a tested technique for helping people relax because it slows the heartbeat and relaxes the muscles. Try taking a big breath, holding it in for a little bit, and then breathing out slowly. You can repeat as you find necessary.

Consider Sedation

Sedation isn’t just for people who are undergoing an invasive procedure. Many patients use it to reach a deeper state of relaxation at their appointment or to make it seem like the time has flown by. Talk to your dentist to see which sedation options they provide and which might benefit you. They can range from mild nitrous oxide (laughing gas) all the way to IV sedation.
