Impacted Wisdom Teeth — Occasionally, there will not be enough space inside of the jaw for the final set of molars — otherwise known as wisdom teeth — to erupt properly. When they become impacted against other teeth, it can lead to infections, tooth damage, or changes in the bite alignment.
Removal of wisdom teeth can prevent crowding and wisdom teeth may also be more prone to causing inflammation or infection if they do not fully emerge.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure
Although there are exceptions, most tooth extractions are uneventful procedures that last only a few minutes. Usually, we will have already taken x-rays of the teeth prior to the procedure. The tooth, gum, and bone will then be anesthetized using a local numbing agent for a patient who will be awake for the extraction. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, may also be administered to help with anxiety during the procedure. Once the extraction begins, patients should feel only pressure – not pain. In most cases, Dr. Hess or Dr. Laos can remove the tooth using only applied pressure to the socket and dental forceps, rather than surgical intervention.
In some cases, Dr. Hess or Dr. Laos may recommend full sedation – especially if there will be more than one tooth extracted during the procedure. In this case, the patient is instead given anesthesia intravenously to prevent pain throughout the entire body. Patients who undergo a sedated tooth extraction will have no memory of the procedure. In any case, your comfort is our top priority.
Wisdom Teeth FAQs
Why do wisdom teeth hurt?
Just like when your other teeth first came in, it can be a bit uncomfortable when your wisdom teeth start to erupt. If your wisdom teeth are coming in incorrectly, it can become more painful because they’re pushing on your surrounding teeth or because there’s an infection.
When is tooth removal necessary?
Tooth removal may be necessary when you have a severe tooth infection, your tooth is so fractured or damaged it can’t be repaired, your wisdom teeth are impacted, or your wisdom teeth are causing crowding.
What’s the difference between a simple and surgical tooth extraction?
A simple extraction is the procedure used when a tooth is visible/above the gum line and can be pulled easily with instruments. A surgical extraction is the procedure used when a tooth has broken under the gum line or isn’t fully erupted.
Even if you don't, having an attractive smile you love enough to admire as best as you can every time you have the opportunity suggests that there might be just one life that's a lot more fun with teeth that you are content to admire.

My insurance changed so I chose Green Tree Dental for its location and reviews, and thank goodness I found them because they are a gem. Everyone is so friendly and helpful, and it really feels like there's a focus on prevention and education over just getting bodies through the door. At first I was a little taken aback by how personable everyone was, remembering little details like previous conversations and when we will be back. But it feels nice to not feel so anonymous in a doctor's office. Looking forward to more years with this office! So glad I found them!
Went in to for an implant consultation. The staff was very friendly and professional as was the dentist. He was really informative and answered all my questions. They even laughed at my stupid jokes which made me feel even more at ease:) I was extremely happy with my visit
I dont do many reviews but Green Tree Dental is a place where they care about you and you leave feeling valued as a person not just a patient. They are extremely patient with the crazy web of Dental Insurance also!!! Good job Greentree Dental!
